Your Superpower: Sleep (1 min. read)
by Michael Franks, Vantage Senior Wealth Advisor
A question that is on many people’s minds: Will my healthcare costs bankrupt me and my family in retirement?
There are many advantageous financial instruments that can help protect your legacy and family. Taking better care of ourselves is something we all can do.
One of the top habits for your health you can start today is getting enough quality sleep. Poor and inadequate sleep has been linked to many health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Three things you can do now to enable yourself to wander off to dreamland and help stave off some debilitating health conditions:
1. Get a good mattress. Good mattresses can be costly but considering that we can spend up to a third of our lives in bed, having a mattress that helps and does not hinder your sleep is worth the investment.
2. Turn off those screens! We all love our smartphones, tablets, computers, and TV’s but engaging with those devices before your appointment with the Sandman can interfere with your body’s natural production of melatonin. Melatonin is the natural hormone your body produces for you to be sleepy and ready to sleep and putting them away 30 minutes to an hour before your bedtime is reasonable cost for rejuvenating sleep.
3. Avoid caffeine 8 hours before sleeping. I love my coffee; I mean I really love my coffee. When I was in Afghanistan, my friends and family would send me lbs. of small batch and regional coffees and it was quite the luxury. However, consuming caffeine less than 8 hours before settling down for the night may be interfering with your ability to get enough sleep.
Your health and your wealth are intimately connected: Protect both with the power of sleep.
